Crackle is the most misdiagnosed sound in audio. Most people hear it and think “blown speaker” — but a speaker that crackles only at high volume is usually reporting a different crime: your amplifier running out of headroom and clipping the signal. The speaker is just the messenger. The good news: the symptom pattern tells you the cause before you touch a screwdriver.

Short answer: crackle only at high volume is usually amplifier clipping — turn down 10–20% and it should vanish. Crackle at every volume is a connection problem. Crackle from one speaker only is that speaker’s wire or driver. The five checks below pin it down in ten minutes.

The 5 checks, in order

  1. Swap the speakers between channels. This one test cuts the problem in half. If the crackle moves with the speaker, the fault is in that speaker or its wire. If it stays on the same side, the fault is upstream — amp channel, cable or source. Do this before anything else.
  2. Check every connection. Power off, then reseat speaker wire at both ends — you are looking for one stray copper strand bridging terminals (the same fault that trips receiver protect mode), loose banana plugs, corroded contacts, or a half-seated RCA/optical cable at the source. Wiggle-test while playing quiet music: crackle that tracks the wiggle is your answer.
  3. Understand the clipping test. If crackle appears only past, say, 70% volume: your amp is being asked for more clean power than it has. Clipping flattens the waveform into distortion — and that distortion, not volume itself, is what burns out tweeters.   4. Inspect the driver. Remove the grille and look: tears or holes in the cone, a wrinkled surround, or debris in the cone. Gently play a bass-heavy track and listen close — a scratching voice coil is unmistakable, like sandpaper under the music. Dust is the innocent version: a soft brush or compressed air clears crackle-adjacent grit.
  5. Rule out the source. Try a different input, a different file or streaming service, and different source hardware. Low-bitrate files, a failing phone jack, or interference from a nearby router can all masquerade as “speaker” crackle — if a second source is clean, the speakers were never guilty.

If it really is blown

A damaged driver does not heal. Is speaker crackling dangerous?

The crackle itself is a symptom, but its most common high-volume cause – amplifier clipping – actively damages tweeters over time. If crackle appears when loud, turn down until you can fix the headroom problem properly.

Why do my speakers only crackle at high volume?

Because that is where your amplifier runs out of clean power and starts clipping the signal. The distortion products of clipping sound like crackle and are hard on drivers. Reducing bass boost and volume, or using a more powerful amp, removes it.

Can a blown speaker be fixed?

A torn cone or scratching voice coil will not recover on its own. Individual drivers can often be replaced if you can source the matching part; reconing is viable for expensive drivers. For budget speakers, replacement is usually cheaper than repair.

Why does my phone or laptop speaker crackle?
